MicWrecka - The Wrecktifier

MicWrecka brings a brand of fiery, furious emceeing not heard since the days when hip-hop was about righteousness and fighting the power. When not busy clubbing lesser emcees to death on the mic, he also crafts the majority of beats for his group The Rebel Scum, creating dark and gritty sounds that are as thought-provoking as they are infectious, which indubitably played a part in making them an underground favourite. But he is not one to keep his talents within the group, MicWrecka co-executive produced Familyboy's EP and made beats for Jin Hackman, both members of his crew Rogue Squadron, along with several other artists outside of the crew (Dose Two, Ghetto Republic, Kraft).

If there's one thing MicWrecka loathes more than wack rappers, it's the current state of hip-hop. Bourgeois rappers with delusions of thuggery, bling and shutter shades, rims and getting low, Soulja Boy's confouding popularity, MTV. All these only serve to feed his wrath. Finally hitting his threshold of tolerance for (c)rap, MicWreck bestows upon himself the role of The Wrecktifier, becoming both wrecker and rectifier of hip hop. This is no mere portmanteau branding though, MicWrecka is dead set to wrecktify what he sees as the nadir of hip-hop – with or without his crew.

Come March 2009, The Wrecktifier takes album form. While this is MicWrecka's first attempt at a solo outing, the LP is nevertheless as abrasive and confrontational as his group work in its politics and battle raps. Yet this is contrasted by more intimate subject matters such as love and reminiscences of life. These two disparate traits find cohesion in MicWrecka's unrelenting honesty. Backed by hard-hitting beats not out place on a Def Jux or Wu-Tang release, machinegun-like vocal delivery and lyrics with more syllable counts than the most verbose of prose, MicWrecka promises to destroy and rebuild the hip-hop scene. After all, there must be chaos before order comes.

The Wrecktifier is produced by MicWreck himself, crew mates Phrozt, Skware-1 and Illson, Coda Massive of DnB outfit The Works, Azrael of XS-One, and Malaysia's most renowned turntablist, DJ Fuzz. With guest appearances by Proximas, Illevate, Illson, Dose2, hip hop legend Lady Dee (from Naughtius Maximus), Ghetto Republic, SSK, Jin Hackman, Altimet, Figure of Speech, Apocalypse Dawn, Wordsmanifest, HQA, and Ash G.

The Bomb Shelter II @ Cloth & Clef, 11th February 2009 10PM Onwards, FREE

You didn't think we'd stop at just one, right?

THE BOMB SHELTER is back, and this time around we're bringing you a potent mix of old school and new school (all true school, t;hough, you know this) live hip hop and r&b. We're turning it up a notch with some brand new discoveries for KL hip hop and a welcome return to the fold by a few pioneers who helped engineer this rap shit in the first place:

EMBERZ of SOUL: Laydee Dee (of Naughtius Maximus) and Deff were one of the first R&B duos to ever hit KL, and for the first time in a looong time, these ladies are hitting the stage again to show the little girls (and some boys) how it's done. You haven't seen anything like this in a while, people. Bear witness. And just in time for Valentine's, too!

SAMIR: Straight pounds from the Ruffneck. If you don't already know, you need a hip hop intervention. Samir has been at the forefront of Malaysian hip hop since he dropped bombs with Da Joint way back in '96, and he's not about to quit just yet. One of the best live performers KL's ever had, miss the OG showtime man at your peril. Champion styleeeeeee.

FIGURE of SPEECH and APOCALYPSE DAWN: When we say beats and rhymes are the foundation, we mean these two guys. Spoken word poets already well-known in the local coffee shop circuit, FoS and AD are new additions to the Rogue Squadron roster, and they'll be dropping science over beats courtesy of RS beatsmiths like MicWrecka, Cliq and Skware-1. You can't handle the truth!

DARK PARADE: Ever since they came up on the Malaysian Fusion X II CD back in the day, Dark Parade's been holding it down for the community, hardbody style. Ad Voc (who just picked up a trophy for 2nd Best Hip Hop Song at the VIMAs a couple of weeks ago) and Think You Got Skillz veteran Dice keep it gully like hard knock aesthetics never went away. DP got that crazy ish!

FAMILYBOY: We all call him Boss Chan, but he's too modest to name himself that. For now. One of Rogue Squadron's backbone members, Familyboy is about the only emcee man enough in Malaysia to do death rap (no typo), as evidenced in his 2006 EP Heavily Sedated. He's got a few flips on his style, just for this show. Prepare to die.

TRINITI: I'm from the North myself, but damn. I never EVER thought I'd see the day an underground hip hop crew from Kangar, Perlis (that's my hood right there, so I love it, but yo - place is tiny) get on stage and do their thing in KL. DMent, Thane, Ajall and the homie Elf are new to KL hip hop politics, so be there when they swoop by to say hello.

DJ JOCULAR: Yall already know what it is. Headshell Heroes. Boom bap, hardbody, true school hip hop, straight no chaser. Accept no substitutes. Even from a WM clone. Ha!

The Bomb Shelter II is brought to you by Malaysia's largest independent hip hop collective, the Rogue Squadron; Cloth & Clef; and JUICE Magazine Malaysia as official media partner. See you people there!

Edjamahcatin'

Adly Syairi Ramly who is in my opinion one of the best music journalist in the country (or was, since he's now busy hijacking XFM instead) ran a few hip hop articles on Malay Mail not so long ago documenting the history of local hip hop. A lot of us heads missed most of this including me, cause I was and am still ignant when it comes to newspapers. But some major dudes did take notice, I recall Tripdisz (Pac of Doja, All Starz Division, Beat Conductah Extraordinaire) informing me of these articles, he also mentioned atuk Spit (Naughtius Maximus) collecting them.

However don't fret. Adly put up a note on facebook (with more to come) about local hip hop history and it's really detailed. We babies better get schooled.

Oh yeah, there's also a brief mention about TRS' origin. Sweet.

TRS @ i-eat-music | FriedChilliesTV, and VIMA

Actually we did these i-eat-music & VIMA interviews about a week or two ago I think. I forgot to check earlier whether they were up and just now I logged in to the website and it's there! Other VIMA nominees interviewed about food were Dose Two, DJ Ad-Voc (Nesh Dark Parade), Pot Amir Radiostar(ex-Innuendo), Deepset, Rithan Deja Voodoo Spells, and CODA.

Checkidoot (it was kinda fun):

Food rituals before a gig?

Worse food ever had?

Are you a good cook?

..Oh yeah and the VIMA is gon' be happening in a few hours. We're definitely not gonna win anything since we're grungoid losers so WordsManifest was hoping there would be a buffet, and me, I'm pretty sure there will be plenty of hot local (or not) chicks to look passively at. Anyhow it's gonna be a historic event so it's gonna be dope.

Pss: they betta have air conditioning, I'm planning to wear this cool 20 bucks hoodie I just bought.
